I'm part of the fellowship of the unashamed. I
have Holy Spirit power. The die has been cast. I have stepped over the line. The
decision has been made. I'm a disciple of His. I won't look back, let up, slow
down, back away, or be still.
My past is redeemed, my present makes
sense, my future is secure. I'm finished with low living, sight walking, small
planning, smooth knees, colorless dreams, tamed visions, mundane talking, cheap
living, and dwarfed goals.
I no longer need pre-eminence, prosperity,
position, promotions, plaudits, or popularity. I don't have to be right, first,
tops, recognized, praised, regarded, or rewarded. I now live by faith, lean on
His presence, walk by patience, lift by prayer, and labor by power.
My
face is set, my gait is fast, my goal is heaven, my road is narrow, my way
rough, my companions few, my guide reliable, my mission clear. I cannot be
bought, compromised, detoured, lured away, turned back, deluded or delayed. I
will not flinch in the face of sacrifice, hesitate in the presence of the
adversary, negotiate at the table of the enemy, ponder at the pool of
popularity, or meander in the maze of mediocrity.
I won't give up, shut
up, let up, until I have stayed up, stored up, prayed up, paid up, preached up
for the cause of Christ. I am a disciple of Jesus. I must go till He comes, give
till I drop, preach till all know, and work till He stops me. And when He comes
for His own, He will have no problems recognizing me - my banner will be clear!

Christ is building His kingdom with earth’s broken things...
Christ is building His
kingdom with earth’s broken things. Men want only the strong, the
successful, the victorious, the unbroken—in building their kingdoms. But God is
the God of the the unsuccessful, of those who have failed. Heaven is filling
with earth’s broken lives, and there is no ‘bruised reed’ which Christ cannot
take and restore to glorious blessedness and beauty. He can take the life
crushed by pain or sorrow—and make it into a harp whose music shall be all
praise. He can lift earth’s saddest failure up to heaven’s glory! ...JR Miller image by

One of the most delightful qualities of divine love...
For the mountains shall
depart, and the hills be removed; but my kindness shall not depart from thee,
neither shall the covenant of my peace be removed, saith the Lord that hath
mercy on thee. Isaiah 54:10
One of the most delightful qualities of divine love is its abiding character. The pillars of the earth may be moved out of their places, but the kindness and the covenant of our merciful Jehovah never depart from His people. How happy my soul feels in a firm belief of this inspired declaration! The year is almost over, and the years of my life are growing few, but time does not change my Lord. New lamps are taking the place of the old; perpetual change is on all things, but our Lord is the same. Force over turns the hills, but no conceivable power can affect the eternal God. Nothing in the past, the present, or the future can cause Jehovah to be unkind to me.
My soul, rest in the eternal kindness of the Lord, who treats thee as one near of kin. Remember also the everlasting covenant. God is ever mindful of it—see that thou art mindful of it too. In Christ Jesus the glorious God has pledged Himself to thee to be thy God and to hold thee as one of His people. Kindness and covenant-dwell on these words as sure and lasting things which eternity itself shall not take from thee. ...CH Spurgeon image

Fire is the chosen symbol of Heaven...
Fire is the chosen symbol of Heaven for moral passion. It is emotion aflame. God is love; God is fire. The two are one. The Holy Spirit baptises in fire. Spirit-filled souls are ablaze for God. They love with a love that glows. They believe with a faith that kindles. They serve with a devotion that consumes. They hate sin with a fierceness that burns. They rejoice with a joy that radiates. Love is perfected in the Fire of God. ...Samuel Chadwick image

Love came down at Christmas...
Love came down at Christmas,
Love all lovely, Love Divine;
Love was born at Christmas,
Star and Angels gave the sign.
Worship we the Godhead,
Love Incarnate, Love Divine;
Worship we our Jesus:
But wherewith for sacred sign?
Love shall be our token,
Love be yours and love be mine,
Love to God and all men,
Love for plea and gift and sign.

The King shall come when morning dawns...
The King shall come when morning dawns,
And light triumphant breaks;
When beauty gilds the eastern hills,
And life to joy awakes.
Not as of old a little child
To bear, and fight, and die,
But crowned with glory like the sun
That lights the morning sky.
O brighter than that glorious morn
Shall this fair morning be,
When Christ, our King, in beauty comes,
And we His face shall see.
The King shall come when morning dawns,
And earth’s dark night is past;
O haste the rising of that morn,
The day that aye shall last.
And let the endless bliss begin,
By weary saints foretold,
When right shall triumph over wrong,
And truth shall be extolled.
The King shall come when morning dawns,
And light and beauty brings:
Hail, Christ the Lord! Thy people pray,
Come quickly, King of kings.

Rejoice, all ye believers...
Rejoice, all ye believers,
And let your lights appear!
The evening is advancing,
And darker night is near.
The Bride-groom is arising,
And soon He draweth nigh.
Up, watch, and pray, and wrestle,
At midnight comes the cry!
The watchers on the mountain
Proclaim the Bride-groom near;
Go meet Him as He cometh,
With hallelujahs clear.
The marriage feast is waiting,
The gates wide open stand!
Up, up, ye heirs of glory,
The Bride-groom is at hand!
Ye saints, who here in patience
Your cross and suff’rings bore,
Shall live and reign forever,
Where sorrow is no more.
Around the throne of glory
The Lamb ye shall behold,
In triumph cast before Him
Your diadems of gold!
Our Hope and Expectation,
O Jesus now appear;
Arise, Thou Sun so longed for,
O'er this benighted sphere!
With hearts and hands uplifted,
We plead, O Lord, to see
The day of earth’s redemption,
That brings us unto Thee!

With rev'rence let the saints appear...
With rev'rence let the saints appear,
And bow before the Lord;
His high commands with rev'rence hear,
And tremble at his word.
How terrible thy glories be!
How bright thine armies shine!
Where is the power that vies with thee,
Or truth compared to thine?
Thy words the raging winds control,
And rule the boist'rous deep;
Thou mak'st the sleeping billows roll,
The rolling billows sleep.
Justice and judgment are thy throne,
Yet wondrous is thy grace;
While truth and mercy, joined in one,
Invite us near thy face.

Hail to the Lord’s anointed...
Hail to the Lord’s anointed, great David’s greater Son!
Hail in
the time appointed, His reign on earth begun!
He comes
to break oppression, to set the captive free;
To take
away transgression and rule in equity.
He comes in succor speedy to those who suffer wrong;
To help
the poor and needy, and bid the weak be strong;
To give
them songs for sighing, their darkness turn to light,
Whose
souls, condemned and dying, were precious in His sight.
He shall come down like showers upon the fruitful earth;
Love,
joy, and hope, like flowers, spring in His path to birth.
Before
Him, on the mountains, shall peace, the herald, go,
And
righteousness, in fountains, from hill to valley flow.
Kings shall fall down before Him, and gold and incense bring;
All
nations shall adore Him, His praise all people sing;
For He
shall have dominion o’er river, sea and shore,
Far as
the eagle’s pinion or dove’s light wing can soar.
For Him shall prayer unceasing and daily vows ascend;
His
kingdom still increasing, a kingdom without end:
The
mountain dews shall nourish a seed in weakness sown,
Whose
fruit shall spread and flourish and shake like Lebanon.
O’er every foe victorious, He on His throne shall rest;
From age
to age more glorious, all blessing and all blest.
The tide
of time shall never His covenant remove;
His Name
shall stand forever, His Name to us is Love.

Every growth of spiritual life...
Every growth of spiritual life, from the first tender shoot until now, has been the work of the Holy Spirit....The only way to more life is the Holy Spirit. You will not even know that you want more unless He works in you to desire it....The Spirit of God must come and make the letter alive, transfer it to your heart, set it on fire, and make it burn within you, or else its divine force and majesty will be hid from your eyes....Prayer is the creation of the Holy Spirit. We cannot do without prayer, and we cannot pray without the Holy Spirit. ...CH Spurgeon image

Feast of Michael and all Angels
Just Disconnect
It was said of John Henry Newman that he was never less alone than when alone. Newman liked the peace and quiet of isolation: it allowed him to read, to think and to write.
I confess to some sympathy for Newman on this. I do not like the hyperconnectivity of the current world. As an administrator at Westminster, I had a seminary cell phone. I had to upgrade it to a smartphone last year because Verizon indicated they would no longer support the vintage model I then possessed. I remember that, when I went in to exchange it, the man behind the counter looked at the phone, looked at me and then, choking back the laughter, declared "You're that guy!" Shamed into silence, I nodded mutely and mumbled my mandated request for a smartphone.
Now, having stepped down from the administration, I have rid myself of the thing and reverted to a phone that (and yes, this sounds terribly outdated, I know) simply allows me to phone people. You know, like they did in the olden days. Sadly, I am sure that the free market will ensure that it will be 'no longer supported' within a few years. At that point I will have to pay extra every month for a data package to provide data which I have no interest in receiving, but until then, I can resist, Canute-like, the incoming tide of things I really do not need or like but which others have determined that I apparently 'must have.'...
Changing the World Begins with Prayer
...The work of reaching and changing the world is, indeed, a work done on our knees. And, it is a work that takes on the nature of fierce and intense warfare. After all, one of Satan’s chief weapons is to cut off communication with God, communication that takes place in prayer. John Piper is certainly correct when he writes, “Prayer is meant by God to be a wartime walkie-talkie, not a domestic intercom … not for the enhancement of our comforts but for the advancement of Christ’s Kingdom.”...

For the first two or three years after my conversion...
For the first two or three years after my conversion, I used to ask for specific things. Now I ask for God. Supposing there is a tree full of fruits, you will have to go and buy or beg the fruits from the owner of the tree. Every day you would have to go for one or two fruits. But if you can make the tree your own property, then all the fruits will be your own. In the same way, if God is your own, then all things in Heaven and on earth will be your own, because He is your Father and is everything to you; otherwise you will have to go and ask like a beggar for certain things. When they are used up, you will have to ask again. So ask not for gifts, but for the Giver of Gifts: not for life but for the Giver of Life—then life and the things needed for life will be added unto you. ...Sadhu Sundar Singh image by Liz West

One of the most essential qualities of faith...
One of the most essential qualities of faith that is to attempt great things for God and expect great things from God, is holy audacity. Where we are dealing with a supernatural Being, and taking from Him things that are humanly impossible, it is easier to take much than little; it is easier to stand in a place of audacious trust than in a place of cautious, timid clinging to the shore. Likewise, seamen in the life of faith, let us launch out into the deep, and find that all things are possible with God, and all things are possible unto him that believeth. ...AB Simpson image by Shelly Prevost

When night comes, list thy deeds; make plain the way
’Twixt heaven and thee; block it not with delays;
But perfect all before thou sleep’st: then say:

When we come to faith and grow in Christlikeness...
When we come to faith and grow in Christlikeness, the Lord pours more light into our lives and illuminates our circumstances. He does this to call us to partnership with him in transforming his creation. It is a call to thoughtfully and intentionally participate in Kingdom building. While he need not count on us, he delights to do so. We do this in loving response to all he has done for us, as a response to his grace. When we partner with him, we achieve great things for the sake of his Kingdom and the glory due his name.

Christian community...
Christian community is not an ideal that we must realize, but rather a reality created by God in Christ in which we may participate. How sweet are Your words to my taste! Yes, sweeter than honey to my mouth! – Psalm 119:103
It has been a week since I returned from London when the Lord sent a group of evangelists to proclaim the glorious Gospel of Jesus Christ during the 2012 Summer Olympics. While I am adjusting to the “normal routine” of life, my heart still lingers in London with all that the Lord accomplished for His glory. I miss my brothers and sisters who I labored with from the States, as well as my new friends who the Lord blessed me to meet and labor beside. While I cannot possibly remember all the good things that happened during our mission, I hope I will be able to share some things the Lord has used to teach me and grow personally as a result of the trip. I’ll share two such stories in this article (note: names have been changed to protect identities). Here-very uplifting!

As every pilgrim in the spiritual life knows...
True fidelity consists in obeying God in all things...
To this sincere desire to do the will of God, we must add a cheerful spirit, that is not overcome when it has failed, but begins again and again to do better; hoping always to the very end to be able to do it; bearing with its own involuntary weakness, as God bears with it; waiting with patience for the moment when it shall be delivered from it; going straight on in singleness of heart, according to the strength that it can command; losing no time by looking back, nor making useless reflections upon its falls, which can only embarrass and retard its progress. ...Francois Fenelon image by Misko

The chosen three, on mountain height..
The chosen three, on mountain height,
While Jesus bowed in prayer,
Beheld His vesture glow with light,
His face shine wondrous fair.
And lo! with the transfigured Lord,
Leader and seer they saw;
With Carmel’s hoary prophet stood
The giver of the law.
From the low bending cloud above,
Whence radiant brightness shone,
Spake out the Father’s voice of love,
“Hear My belovèd Son!”
Lord, lead us to the mountain height;
To prayer’s transfiguring glow;
And clothe us with the Spirit’s might
For grander work below.

Regeneration is a birth...
Regeneration is a birth: the centre and root of the personality, the spirit, has been renewed and taken possession of by the Spirit of God. But time is needed for its power from that centre to extend through all the circumference of his being. The kingdom of God is like unto a seed; the life in Christ is a growth, and it would be against the laws of nature and grace alike if we expected from the babe in Christ the strength that can only be found in the young men, or the rich experience of the fathers.

The great heresies in the early Church...
The great heresies in the early Church arose not from the rapid expansion result of these unknown [and untrained] teachers; but in those churches which were longest established, and where the Christians were not so busily engaged in converting the heathen around them. The Church of that day was apparently quite fearless of any dangers that the influx of large numbers of what we should call illiterate converts might lower the standard of church doctrine. She held the tradition handed down by the apostles, and expected the new converts to grow up into it, to maintain it and to propagate it. And so in fact they did. The danger to doctrine lay not in these illiterate converts on the outskirts; but at home, in places like Ephesus and Alexandria, amongst the more highly educated and philosophically minded Christians. It was against them that she had to maintain the doctrine. ...Roland Allen image

The criterion for our intercessory prayer is not our earnestness, nor our faithfulness, nor even our faith in God, but simply God Himself. He then asks us to present these requests to Him that He may show His gracious hand. ...Charles H Troutman image
